Joao Velloso

About

Dr. Joao Velloso is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law (Common Law) of the University of Ottawa. He works in the areas of criminal law and sentencing, immigration law, criminology and socio-legal studies. He is especially interested in the judicialization of social problems and the governance of security through the use of different legal regimes, mainly the intersections between criminal law and administrative law. His empirical research deals with the penalization of protesters and migrants, access to justice in detention and the regulation of cannabis. He is a member of the uOttawa Human Rights Research Center and a co-investigator in different research networks: Access to Law and Access to Justice Partnership (www.adaj.ca), Institute of Comparative Studies in Conflict Management (http://www.ineac.uff.br/, Brazil), the Observatory on Profiling (https://profilages.info/), the Observatory of Violence and Criminalization in Latin America (http://ovcd.org/) and the Ottawa Hub for Harm Reduction (https://ottawaharmredux.org/). Dr. Velloso has worked in the past with Drs. D. Moore, Kilty, Nakache and Sozzo. He will represent Canada on the Steering Committee, co-lead the Canada Jurisdictional Team with Dr. D. Moore, and lead the research hub for the Canadian federal jurisdiction.
