Call for Participation: Advisory Board for Prison Transparency Project Are you an individual with expertise living as an incarcerated person in a prison, jail, or immigration detention centre in Canada? We are seeking dedicated and passionate people to join the Advisory Board for the Prison Transparency Project (PTP). This project aims to illuminate how transparency operates in the prison system. We invite you to contribute your knowledge and insight to help ensure that our research is both ethical and comprehensive. Governance Structure: The PTP is an international, multi-faceted project that operates through collaborative governance, aiming to make decisions by consensus. The Advisory Board will monitor, review, and offer feedback on the activities of all aspects of the project. Mandate: 1.Safeguard Well-being: To ensure that our research does not cause harm to people involved, directly or indirectly, especially justice impacted people. 2.Maintain Integrity: To identify and address any gaps in our research, ensuring it remains accurate, comprehensive, and unbiased. Who Should Apply? We are looking for people who: •Have lived experience within the criminal or immigration detention systems at either the federal or provincial levels, •Are committed to promoting transparency and accountability in the justice system, •Can provide valuable insights to enhance the impact and accuracy of our research, •Are able to advocate for the collective of people who have survived incarceration. Responsibilities: As a member of the Advisory Board, you will: •Review and provide feedback on our research direction (documents provided in French and English), •Help develop strategies to protect the well-being of partners and participants, •Ensure that the research addresses all relevant issues and perspectives, •Participate in regular meetings and contribute to discussions on project direction and outcomes (3 – 4 meetings per year). Compensation: We value your time and expertise and will compensate you for your contributions to approximately 15 hours of work over the year. We will discuss rates with you. How to Apply: If you are interested in contributing to this vital initiative, please send a brief biography of your experiences with incarceration (we are not interested in offense histories so please do not include these) that also indicates your warrant status and, if still under warrant, what sorts of conditions you are under (we do not want anyone to be in breach). Please also provide a short answer to the following three questions. For the sake of accessibility, answers may be voice-recorded and sent as audio files. 1)The team is talking about doing research on mental health care. Imagine this is not an issue that concerned you while incarcerated but you saw how other people were impacted by low quality mental health care. Would you participate in this discussion and share what you witnessed with the team or would you stay out of this conversation because it did not impact you directly? Can you please give reasons for your answer? 2)The team is planning on doing interviews with an individual or organization you had or still have a beef with – you reached out to them repeatedly while inside and they never responded / helped or they did something that caused you harm. What questions would you ask the researchers to consider before they move forward with the research with this individual or organization? 3)This position also contains training opportunities especially around group decision making, conflict resolution and collective advocacy. Are you interesting in developing skills in any of these areas? If so, can you tell us more (i.e. I want to learn how to write for advocacy or I would like to develop better group work skills). Application Deadline: [August 8, 2024] Together, we can create a more transparent and accountable prison system.
